South Florida Speedster Likes Tigers

One of the top athletes in South Florida talks about getting a recent offer from Auburn and where the Tigers stand.

Miami, Fla.--Speed is always something college football coaches are looking for in a player and one of the top prospects in South Florida has plenty of it.

Because of his explosiveness and acceleration on both sides of the ball, George Baker from Archbishop Carroll High is a 5-11, 171 running back/defensive back who is being recruited by teams from around the country.

"I'm hearing from Auburn, Miami, Florida, South Carolina, Connecticut, Maryland, Pittsburgh, Ole Miss, Central Florida FIU, Wisconsin and a lot of others," Baker tells Inside The Auburn Tigers. "I have offers from Ole Miss, FIU, UCF and Auburn was the most recent. I got it after I talked with Coach (Eddie) Gran last night."

Although Auburn is his latest offer, Baker says he has a good feel for the program already. Because of Auburn's history of success with players from the Miami area as well as the success of former Tigers in the NFL, Baker says Auburn moved "on top right now" after getting the offer Sunday night.

"It was a big surprise to me," Baker says. "I have been watching the program for a couple of years now. It's a good program. They produce good running backs and that's what they're recruiting me as.

"The coaches seem like they are nice from when I talk with them on the phone. Coach Gran told me he was going to be down over the spring to watch me practice and stuff like that."

A track standout with a personal-best time of 10.7 seconds in the 100 meters and a smoking 4.37 in the 40 at a recent combine, Baker uses that speed to excel on both sides of the ball for his team. As a junior he rushed for 1,010 yards and 12 touchdowns on just 93 carries while also adding over 50 tackles, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries on defense.

Throw in three kickoff returns for scores and two punt returns for touchdowns on special teams and you have what amounts to the complete package on the high school level. He says because of his all-around game he'll play anywhere on the next level although he prefers to be the hunter and not the hunted.

"Some of them are recruiting me as a defensive back and some as a running back," Baker says. "I would like to play cornerback, but I just want to make plays. I'll play wherever a team needs me.

"On offense I'm a speed guy," he adds. "I'm not the type of guy that is going to run you over. I'm basically going to give you a move and try to beat you to the outside and be gone after that.

"Defensively, I like to play man coverage and get up on a receiver and be physical with them. I like to jam them off the line and punish them and try to get in their heads. I'm a real aggressive player. I like to come up and hit."

Baker plans to camp at Auburn as well as several other schools this summer.
