AU Freshman Opens NCAA Play With Victory

Athens, Ga.--Auburn freshman Fani Chifchieva earned up a 6-3, 7-6 win over Emilija Arnaudovska of Southeastern Louisiana in the first round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Wednesday.

After taking the first set, the 16th ranked Chifchieva found herself down in the second, but battled her way back to force a tiebreaker. Up 6-4, she approached the net and finished off No. 87 Arnaudovska with an overhead smash.

With the win, Chifchieva moves on to face No. 58 Csilla Borsanyi of Florida in the round of 32 on Thursday. Borsanyi was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over No. 42 Danielle Steinberg of Arizona on Wednesday.

The 13th-ranked Auburn doubles team of sophomore Alex Haney and freshman Melissa Koning will be in action on Thursday as they take on the second ranked duo of Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long of North Carolina in the opening round of doubles play.
