No Senior Slacking Planned for Big Lineman

Anniston High standout Antoine McClain discusses recruiting.

Anniston, Ala.--Antoine McClain has already established that he is one of the state's top football recruits for the class of 2008. However, the big offensive lineman is far from satisfied with his current status.

"I am working on getting stronger and doing a better job of finishing on my blocks," the six-foot-six tackle says.

"I am actually trying to slim down right now," he adds. "My goal weight is 295 pounds, which is what I played at last year. Right now I am 310 pounds. I have been working on my quickness. I don't run 40s, but I run a lot of cone drills."

McClain says he will head into his senior season at Anniston High in good shape academically and has plans to keep it that way. "My grade point average wasn't bad, but I was able to get it higher last year," says the lineman, who has been a varsity starter since his ninth grade season.

Another area of focus is taking a leadership role as a senior. "In the spring we got better as a team, but we still have to work on getting stronger," he says.

McClain, who has 14 scholarship offers including one from Auburn, says the Tigers are a team he is seriously considering. "I am planning to narrow my list sometime in July," he notes. "Auburn is a team I am seriously considering. I really like Auburn. They have great tradition."

The offensive lineman participates in a drill at the Elite 150 Camp in Atlanta.

McClain, who plans to attend a one-day camp at Auburn on Saturday, notes that he has been to camps held at two other SEC schools this summer--Alabama and LSU. "They were tight," he says of those trips. "I learned a lot of technique that I think will help me this season. I think learned some drills that will help me be quicker with my feet and do a better job of blocking in blitz situations."

When Anniston opens the season, McClain will be starting for a fourth consecutive year on the varsity level. "The coach we had before didn't believe in starting freshmen, but I came in the summer before the season and worked hard and won the job," he says.
