However, the Tigers led at intermission by just a point, 21-20.
"I felt pretty confident about it," Thompson jokes. "I knew we were going to come out in the second half and have a good half. I don't know what would have happened if we would have lost."
Thompson had already given the ring to one of the Auburn strength coaches and had told his parents to take Renee down to the first row by the end of the game. The Tigers scored on their first possession of the second half to go up 28-20. On the second play of New Mexico State's next possession, Thompson shot through the Aggie offensive line and rushed Chase Holbrook into a poor decision. His pass went right into the hands of Sen'Derrick Marks, setting up another easy score and giving Auburn a 35-20 lead.
At that point Thompson could look ahead to other important matters.
"I got a little nervous there toward when it was going to happen," he says. "Other than that, I wasn't really focused on it until the very end."
By the end of the game, word had spread and Thompson's teammates followed him into the corner of the south end zone after the game was over.
"Q (Quentin Groves) knew about it, Pat (Sims) knew about it. I only told maybe two or three people. I told them again at the end of the game and they started telling everybody. They all circled around at the end. It worked out good though. It wasn't really planned that way, it just happened."
Josh and Renee were high school sweethearts in Statesboro, Ga. They had dated dating off and on since Josh was a junior and Renee was a sophomore in high school. Josh went to the corner she was in, motioned for her to come on the field and dropped to a knee.
"She was pretty surprised," Thompson says. "I was pretty sure she'd say yes. I probably wouldn't have done it like this if there was any thought of her saying no."
Auburn senior Josh Thompson received a yes when he asked for his girlfriend's hand in marriage at Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday night.
The entire proposal was shown on Auburn's new high definition video board, which Thompson said was planned ahead of time. And once Renee said yes, the band fired up the fight song for the future husband and wife.
"I don't have a whole lot of money in college right now to do anything really, really special or anything, and I wanted it to be exciting--something she'd remember and something we'd remember. It just popped in my head one day and that's how it happened."
