SEC Honors Auburn's Smalley

Auburn, Ala.--Freshman guard Alli Smalley has been honored by the Southeastern Conference as her Auburn women's basketball team moved into the Top 25.

Smalley was named the SEC Freshman of the Week following a 20-point performance vs. UAB as she hit 8-10 field goals, including 4-6 three-pointers.

The Tigers, who are currently 24th in the AP poll, are ranked for the first time since finishing 22nd at the end of the 2003-2004 season, Coach Joe Ciampi's final season at Auburn.

"We are excited about the ranking," Auburn coach Nell Fortner said. "It has taken a lot of hard work to get where we are and it will take even more work to keep improving. It is nice to see our efforts start to pay off, but it is all about what you do on the floor and how you perform in games. I know this will be exciting for our team and it will continue to motivate us to do our very best every time we get on the floor."

Smalley, who signed with the Tigers out of Arab High School, is making good progress, says Fortner, who notes that she would like to see the freshman shoot the ball more often."

The Tigers, who are 3-0, return to action on Wednesday at Rochester, Minn., vs. Oakland.
