Speedster Is Auburn's Seventh Football Commitment

Auburn now has seven public verbal football commitments.

Columbus, Miss.--Auburn has picked up its first wide receiver commitment for the 2003 football signee class from Columbus, Miss., High speedster Bruce Edwards.

A 5-10, 165-pounder speedster who has been clocked under 4.5 seconds in the 40, he is a teammate of Auburn commitment Viciente DeLoach, a 6-4, 220-pound defensive end. He is the sixth high school senior to give a verbal commitment to sign with Auburn and seventh overall commitment. He selected the Tigers over Ole Miss and Vanderbilt.

"I really like the coaches and the atmosphere at Auburn," Edwards tells Inside the Auburn Tigers. "I like the relationships the players and coaches have there."

Bruce Edwards attended a football camp at Auburn this summer.

Columbus High assistant coach James Rush says that Auburn is getting a talented player. "He has gained 100 yards in three of the last four games and he just started playing both ways for us," Rush says. "Bruce is a good student--a very good student. He is an excellent baseball player, too. For a while we weren't sure which sport he was going to concentrate on playing.

"Bruce has really good speed. He is the guy who catches almost all of our passes. I would say that on a track he runs a 4.4 40. He set the school record for stolen bases on our baseball team."

As a junior Edwards used his outstanding speed to hit .411 in baseball and steal 41 bases, but says his main interest is in football even though he has received prospects from pro scouts.

Edwards was a standout at an Auburn football camp this summer where he was timed in a sizzling 4.48 in the 40-yard dash. He is also an excellent leaper with a 38 1/2-inch vertical jump. He bench presses 225 pounds and squats 405.

Edwards says it has been a disappointing season for his team that has been plagued by injuries and is currently 2-5. "We have had a lot of problems with turnovers that are being turned into points by the teams we have played. Hopefully, we will play better the rest of the season."

Auburn's other commitments are from:

*Brandon Jacobs, a 6-4, 257 pound tailback from Coffeyville, Kan., Community College.

*Lloyd Blevins, a 6-5, 225, defensive end from Wenonah High in Birmingham.

*Josh Thompson, a 6-1, 289 defensive lineman from Statesboro, Ga., High.

*Jason Jude, a 6-1, 218 running back from Athens, Ala., High.

*Carl Stewart, a 6-3, 205 running back from Maryville, Tenn., High.
