Missing when Drew Cole got to Auburn on Friday was Will Muschamp, the coach who personally recruited him and would have been Cole's position coach and defensive coordinator. Muschamp has moved to the University of Texas to coach on Mack Brown's staff in the Big 12 Conference.
However, the cornerback says after his visit to Auburn that the loss of Muschamp is not an issue, even though the player and coach had a strong relationship that dated back to Muschamp recruiting Cole's older brother to LSU.
Auburn fans are wondering who head coach Tommy Tuberville is going to hire to replace Muschamp. The same can be said of Cole, who notes he didn't have a lot of input on the subject from Tuberville.
"We really didn't talk about it much, just that they have played the same system since he has been at Auburn and he is a defensive-minded guy so they are going to get somebody who runs the system they run who is qualified for the job," Cole says.
Commenting on the trip to Auburn, Cole says, "It went great. Friday night we hung out with our player hosts. On Saturday they pretty much had our day made for us with academics and all of that. Saturday night we had dinner in the stadium and went over to Coach Tuberville's house and everything so it went great."
Redshirt freshman defensive lineman Zach Clayton was Cole's player host and he also hung out with another early Auburn verbal commitment, tight end Vance Smith from Pace, Fla., High School. "We and our player hosts had a good time," Cole notes. "The players told me that Auburn is a great place. We all meshed real well. It was a real family atmosphere."
Cole plans to arrive on the Auburn campus in early summer to get a head start on his freshman season. "I feel real good about my decision to go to Auburn," he says. "I am just finishing up school now. I have just two classes and I am running track. I run the 100 and 200 and I am on the 4x100 and 4x200 relays."
