Tampa, Fla.--One of the nation's most productive wide receivers signed his name on the dotted line at a ceremony at H.B. Plant High as Derek Winter inked with the Auburn Tigers on Wednesday after considering offers from Virginia, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Iowa, South Florida and several others.
An official visitor to Auburn on the weekend of Jan. 18, Winter took official visits to Iowa and Virginia before receiving and taking an offer from the Tigers just two days before signing day.
Receiving the Guy Toph Award as the top player in the Tampa area, the 6-1, 196 Winter had the kind of career at Plant that most receivers can only dream about. Earning All-State honors as a senior, Winter caught 75 passes for 1,668 yards and 18 touchdowns. As a junior his numbers were even more impressive as he hauled in 90 passes for 1,700 yards and 20 touchdowns. He finished his career with 192 receptions for over 4,000 yards and 44 touchdowns.
Winter is one of what is expected to be a large and talented wide receiver class signed by the Tigers in 2008.
