Auburn's Clanton Named SEC's Top Freshman

Birmingham, Ala.--Auburn's Cydney Clanton has been named SEC Women's Golf Freshman of the Year and joins sophomore teammate Candace Schepperle as a first team All-SEC selection.

Clanton, who has a 73.57 strokes per round average which is the third best in the SEC, has six Top 10 finishes. She has finished in the top five in four tournaments and her low round of 66 ties for the second best in AU women's golf history.

"Cydney has really had a standout year," AU coach Kim Evans says. "We are excited to see what the last two events this year have in store for her as she continues to achieve her goals."

Tiger golfers have won the SEC Freshman of the Year honor six of the last nine seasons.

Evans and the Tigers are awaiting word whether they will be headed to Athens, Ga., Austin, Tex., or Sacramento, Calif., for the NCAA Regionals, which will run May 8-10.

Another golfer for the 11th-ranked Tigers, senior Margaret Shirley, was named second team All-SEC.

Shirley and Schepperle were All-SEC second team selections last season. Scheperle averages 74.97 strokes per round and Shirley averages 75.30.

"Candace and Margaret both stepped up this spring season," Evans says. "They earned this honor in our last three events and I am very happy for them. Our season isn't over yet and we are going to keep moving along with our same goal of being at the top."
