Tigers Survive and Advance at NCAA Tournament

Tulsa, Okla.--Auburn sophomore Fani Chifchieva advanced to the third round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Tournament with a victory over Kelcy Tefft of Notre Dame on Thursday.

Chifchieva won the first set 6-4, lost 6-2 in the second set before rallying for a 7-5 victory in the third set.

Action started in doubles competition on Thursday and the Auburn duo of Alex Haney and Melissa Koning advanced to round two with a 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Elizabeth Ferris and Emily Kwok of Utah. The Auburn doubles team will play Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova of Fresno State on Friday.

The SEC Player of the Year, who is ranked 14th nationally, Chifchieva takes on No. 2 seed Ani Mijacika of Clemson in the round of 16 on Friday.

With the victory, Chifchieva improved her record to 25-2 this season.

Auburn's only player in the men's competition, junior Alexey Tsyrenov, wasn't able to advance to the third round of singles play. He fell in straight sets to the No. 7 seed, Lars Poerschke of Baylor, who took a 7-5, 6-4 victory.
