Four-Star Linebacker Down To Five

Find out which five schools made the list for one of 2009's top linebackers.

Tampa, Fla.--One of the country's top linebacker prospects has narrowed his list of schools down to five heading into the summer camp circuit. Talented Petey Smith from Armwood High has over 40 offers but says right now the four-star linebacker says he's concentrating on just five schools.

"Today I narrowed it down to five schools," Smith tells Inside The Auburn Tigers. "They are Auburn, Alabama, North Carolina, Louisville and Illinois."

The younger brother of Auburn signee Eric Smith and ranked eighth among linebackers in the country by Scout.com, he has had plenty of chances to learn about Auburn's program in the last year during his brother‘s recruitment. He says because of that he feels like he's already up to date on what the Tigers deliver in terms of a program on and off the field.

"I like the atmosphere of course," Smith says. "It's a football town. I see myself fitting in the middle of their defense, into a pretty good scheme. They run a 3-4 sometimes and that's what we run in high school right now. I know I have to learn the plays wherever I go, but I think that might make it a little easier for me."

A 6-0, 240-pounder with good speed and instincts, Smith is also a very good baseball player and just finished up his junior season hitting .400 with five home runs as a left fielder. Even with those numbers football has never been too far from his mind as he's already scheduled several camp visits including one to Auburn in a few weeks.

"I'm going to the Auburn camp on the 14th and 15th," Smith says. "I'm going to be up there on the 8th because that's when Eric has to report. I'll be up there then and probably stay there a couple of days. Then I'll come back on the weekend."

While it's not a definite at the moment, Smith says having his older brother on the Auburn campus and a part of the program will only help the Tigers when the time comes for him to make a decision. He says another thing in Auburn's favor is the fact that the Tigers are looking to sign linebackers for his upcoming class.

"That's really all I have been seeing these last couple of months," Smith says. "Coach (Greg) Knox is doing a real good job of recruiting me. He sends me a lot of stuff. Today I had exams coming up and he sent me something that said ‘Finish Strong' so I wouldn't slack off in the classroom.

"I think they only signed one linebacker this year," he adds. "I know next year they have a couple of that will be graduating. That's a big plus for me too because it means I could probably play early."
