'09 Prospect Picks Fortner's Tigers

The Auburn women's basketball team has picked up another verbal commitment.

Moultrie, Ga.--Rising senior Nicolle Thomas has committed to play basketball for Coach Nell Fortner's Auburn Tigers.

Thomas, who plays for Colquitt County High School, was a standout at an Auburn basketball camp this past weekend and received an offer from the Tigers. She plans to sign with Auburn in November.

"I have been going to camps at Auburn since the summer when I was going into the ninth grade and Auburn is where my heart is," she says. "Coach Fortner told me she really liked me and I needed to come back to camp every summer and I have been doing that."

Thomas, who is expected to be a two-guard in college, plays the post for her high school team. She says she averaged 16 points, eight rebounds and five blocks per game as a junior. She plays guard and small forward for her AAU team, the Georgia Blazers.

She is Auburn's third verbal commitment for the 2009 signee class joining Blanche Alverson, a 6-3 forward from Buford, Ga., High, and 6-0 guard Megan Perkins from Robert E. Lee in Montgomery.

Thomas, who stands five-foot-eight, says she has also been recruited by Florida State, Indiana, Arkansas, South Florida and others, but Auburn has been her favorite.

"Ever since I was little all I have ever wanted to do is play basketball," she says. "I am excited to get a chance to play for Coach Fortner at Auburn."
