Tigers Hit the Field Saturday to Open Drills

Auburn, Ala.--Coach Tommy Tuberville will put his 10th Auburn football team on the field for its first preseason practice on Saturday morning with high expectations for the 2008 campaign.

Auburn, which has been picked to win the SEC West by media covering the league, is ranked 11th nationally in the preseason USA Today Coaches Top 25 poll that was announced on Friday.

The first practice will start at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at the intramural fields and the session is open to fans as long as they stay behind the ropes. Fans can get closer to the Tigers for autographs and photos from 3-5 p.m. at Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum on Saturday at Auburn's annual Football Fan Day. There is no admission charge for the event.

Tommy Tuberville talks to the freshmen on Friday evening.

The first day in full pads for the Tigers will be on Wednesday. All of the practices at the intramural fields will be open to fans.

One of the highlights of preseason workouts will be the competition at quarterback where sophomore Kodi Burns will battle juco transfer Chris Todd, a redshirt junior, for the number one spot. Burns finished up the spring with strong performances in the A-Day Game and a scrimmage the following week.

Tiger fans got their first look at their team's new offense in the bowl victory over Clemson. One of the top players on the AU offense, senior guard Tyronne Green, says Tony Franklin's offense has been a major topic of discussion for Auburn fans and players.

"People back home always ask what we think about it and compare it to the old offense," Green says. "I think it is a good offense. We only ran it against Clemson so we really don't know how it is going to play out against other teams to really say, but I think for the most part everybody has bought into offense and the concept of what we are trying to do."

Tyronne Green is considered an NFL prospect at offensive guard.

One of the key players returning on defense for the Tigers, junior cornerback Jerraud Powers, says he is looking forward to seeing the new offensive system in action this fall. "My expectation is I think it is going to be great," he says of Tony Franklin's offense. "I think it is going to be fun to watch and exciting because there are so many weapons that will be on the field at one time.

"I am expecting they are put up some points and it is going to be a lot of points because this is an offense that gives defenses problems," says Powers, who along with Green was one of nine Tigers who were selected to preseason All-SEC teams last week at the league's annual media days. "We have went up against it since the bowl practices and it gives us problems."

Commenting on his expectations for the defense, which is directed by new coordinator Paul Rhoads, Powers says, "I am excited about Saturday and this camp just to get started and working on it. I think we are going to be that same old Auburn defense. I think we are going to be good."
