More Friday Auburn Football Practice Notes

Additional news and notes from a busy Auburn football practice are featured.

Tez Doolittle (99) fights off a block from walk-on Clay Clark (67) at Friday's practice.

*Tez Doolittle, who has been rehabbing a hamstring injury this week, particpated in full contact drills at Friday's practice. The defensive lineman was granted a sixth year of eligibility after missing the entire 2007 season with an Achilles injury suffered in preseason.

*In addition to hitting 46 yard field goals to get their teammates out of post-practice running, Wes Byrum and his backup, Morgan Hull, had three other field goals in a drill to end practice. Byrum made a 35-yarder, then had a 42-yarder blocked that he hit too low before nailing a 40-yarder. Hull's first kick from 40 was down the middle with plenty of distance to spare, but he was slightly wide right on his next kick from 41 yards out and very wide right on the following one from 35 yards out.

*QB Kodi Burns and wide receiver Rod Smith hooked up on a deep sideline pass route as Smith beat freshman cornerback D'Antoine Hood on the play.

*The Autauga Academy football team was a guest of the AU coaching staff at the practice.

*Scouts from the Washington Redskins and Oakland Raiders watched the practice.

*Freshman defensive end Jomarcus Savage says he began preseason drills at around 280 pounds and has lost approximately seven pounds this week, which he notes is something he wanted to do. He began the week playing both defensive end spots. The former Johnson High star from Huntsville is concentrating on strongside end right now.

*There were two fights in full contact work with the offense going against the defense. In the first one true freshman safety Marcus Jemison got the worst end of it as he had to be helped off the field with a twisted ankle after going against redshirt freshman John Douglas. About two minutes later, offensive tackle Lee Ziemba and Antonio Coleman had a quick battle before it was broken up quickly by the coaches.

*Saturday's scrimmage will be Auburn's eighth overall practice this month.

*One of the points of emphasis for the offense in Friday's practice was getting the plays signalled onto the field from the sideline. As was the case in the bowl game, there won't be a huddle and the players will look at the sideline for the hot read from whichever coach is sending in the plays while not looking at the signals fro whoever is sending in decoy signals.

*Sophomore wide receiver Terrell Zachery says he is "having a lot of fun" and continues to catch the ball well. Look for the former Wadley star to be a significant contributor this fall.

*Jerraud Powers had another interception on Friday. He caught a pass thrown to Quindarius Carr in a goal line drill that bounced off the redshirt freshman's hip. Carr reached to the rebound, but he was too late. Powers saw what happened and took the ball away.
