Heavens Ready For New Challenge

Wide receiver prospect Brandon Heavens talks about changing schools for his senior year and gives an update on his recruiting status.

Bessemer, Ala.--One of Auburn's earliest football verbal commitments is preparing to open his senior season after making a move from AISA power Bessemer Academy to Class 5A Jess Lanier in the public schools league.

Wide receiver Brandon Heavens says what might seem like a major move really hasn't been a big deal.

"It has been pretty good," Heavens tells Inside The Auburn Tigers. "I know most all of the players. I have played with them since middle school. I have also known the coach since middle school. It hasn't been that big of a change.

"I was only at Bessemer Academy for two years," he adds. "It hasn't been a big change for me."

The 2007 AISA Back of the Year after accounting for 3,119 total yards (730 rushing, 1,236 receiving, 585 kickoff return, 568 punt return) and 22 touchdowns as a junior for Bessemer Academy, Heavens says that he‘ll continue to do a little bit of everything for Jess Lanier this season and he hopes it leads to a big year for the team.

"I'm still doing everything," Heavens says. "I think we're going to be pretty good."

Currently between 5-9 and 5-10 and just 157 pounds after preseason practices, Heavens says the biggest thing he's trying to work on is becoming a more physical player.

"I have been trying to work on my speed a lot more," he points out. "I have also been working in the weight room to get stronger. I'm hoping to get my weight up to at least 165 pounds before the season is over."

Rated a three-star prospect and the number 94 receiver in the country by Scout.com, Heavens visited Auburn over the summer to check out a camp and says despite getting attention from Florida and several other colleges, he's still firmly committed to the Tigers and is looking forward to seeing the new offense in action this fall.

"Yes sir," Heavens answers when asked if he still feels good about his decision. "Florida is still sending me letters and stuff. I'm going to Auburn."

A former teammate and fellow Auburn commitment, linebacker Harris Gaston, decided to remain at Bessemer Academy this season.

Heavens and his new teammates will be in action this Friday night as Jess Lanier takes on Central Tuscaloosa in a jamboree game and then play Fairfield the following Thursday to open the regular season.
