Wedesday Evening AU Football Practice Notes

News and notes on Wednesday's practice features good news on the injury front for the Auburn football Tigers.

Auburn, Ala.--Auburn head coach Tommy Tuberville said he liked the way the wide receivers caught the football at Wednesday evening's practice as his team prepares for Saturday's home game vs. Southern Mississippi.

The Tigers had a practice that lasted two hours and 15 minutes on Wednesday. The offense and defense practiced separately, just working against their scout teams with the emphasis on execution and timing.

Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m. at Jordan-Hare Stadium and the game will be televised regionally on Raycom.

Tuberville noted that sophomore quarterback Kodi Burns had a good day passing the football, but said it was too early to tell if he would be ready to play on Saturday. Burns suffered a gash in his leg that required stitches in the opening game.

News and notes from the workout include:

*James Swinton returned to practice on Wednesday evening and ran well. Tommy Tuberville said the senior should be ready to play as a reserve on Saturday. He twisted his knee in game one. He was injured catching a pass on the first play from scrimmage.

*Another injured wide receiver, Montez Billings, is expected to play on Saturday after running well at Wednesday's practice. The junior, who has extensive game experience, has had a hamstring problem that sidelined him for the opener.

*Game one starter Merrill Johnson, who has a "tight hamstring," is 95 percent and scheduled to play vs. Southern Miss, Tuberville said. He shares the weakside linebacker duties with fellow senior Chris Evans.

*Tristan Davis, the senior running back, had a good day at practice and is scheduled to be a kickoff returner with Ben Tate and also play running back on Saturday after missing the opener with hamstring, ankle and foot issues.

*The Tigers will return to practice on Thursday morning for what will be their final session before facing the Golden Eagles for the first time since the 1993 season. Southern Miss opened the season with a blowout victory over Louisiana-LaFayette.
