Nashville, Tenn.--Vandy coach Bobby Johnson said he was thrilled with his team's 14-13 SEC football victory over Auburn on Saturday night at Vanderbilt Stadium.

"This is what coaches live for," he said. "I live to walk in that dressing room at the end of the game and see how happy our players are. That's what makes me emotional. They earned it and it was good to see."

Vanderbilt improved to 5-0 with the win, the first 5-0 start for the Commodores since 1943. Auburn fell to 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the SEC.

"Obviously, it was a big win for us, and it was a tough battle, but I am proud of how our guys hung in there because the first quarter was kind of a scare," Johnson said. "But, we came fighting back."

The following are notes and quotes from the game:

*Auburn quarterback Kodi Burns had praise for the Commodores. "I think Vandy is a great team, but we beat ourselves," he said. "We definitely beat ourselves."

Burns added, "We played terrible. It's just a bad deal overall. We have got to get a lot better. The coaches have to figure something out because if we keep playing like this we will lose more games."

*Rod Smith became the seventh player in Auburn history to make 100 career catches. The senior now has 103 receptions since walking on. Smith's touchdown reception was the 10th of his career.

*Jerraud Powers' interception in the first quarter was his second of the season and the sixth of his career. It was the first interception of a Vanderbilt quarterback this season. Coach Tommy Tuberville said the hamstring injury that sidelined the junior appears to be serious.

*Wide receiver Robert Dunn missed the game with an ankle injury and was left behind in Auburn. Tuberville said the senior should be ready for the Arkansas game. Jerraud Powers handled the punt return duties until he was injured and then Chris Slaughter took over that assignment.

*The Tigers have outscored their opponents 34-3 in the first quarter this season including 13-0 vs. Vandy.

*Vanderbilt became the first team to score a touchdown in the first half against Auburn this year, scoring on a 15-yard pass with 39 seconds left.

*Mario Fannin's 28-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter was his first of the year and the third of his career. It was his eighth career touchdown rushing or receiving.
