Leeds Green Wave Rides To Class 3A Title

Leeds ran for 377 yards as they defeated Cordova 38-21 Thursday at Legion Field.

Birmingham, Ala.--Thursday's showdown between Leeds and Cordova was thought to be the ultimate showdown of offense versus defense, but in the end it was the defensive team of Leeds that had all the offense as well as the Green Wave rushed for 377 yards in a 38-21 win at Legion Field to cap off a perfect season and win the title in Class 3A.

Led by game MVP Rush Perkins and his 145 yards, Leeds pounded the Tim Simon-led Cordova squad from start to finish to get the win. Sophomore Dedrick Forsythe added 120 yards on 18 carries while massive Randon Carnathan chipped in with 74. While Simon got his yards, 180 on 21 carries, Leeds did a good job on junior quarterback Ryan Smith, holding him to 18 yards rushing and 47 yards passing on 2-7 attempts.

Cordova started the scoring in this one as Smith carried it over from one-yard out to give the Blue Devils a 7-0 lead just four minutes into the game. Leeds would answer though as Perkins scored from 11 yards in the first of his three touchdowns for the game. A Payne Laster 26-yard field goal with just over one minute left in the first quarter made the score 10-7 Leeds.

Rush Perkins scores one of his three touchdowns.

The score would stay that way until just before halftime as Leeds drove 69 yards in just seven plays with Perkins covering the last 23 yards for his second score. That made it 17-7 at the half and put Cordova in a serious bind after 24 minutes of action.

Things didn't get any easier as Carnathon got into the receiving game in the third quarter with an 11-yard reception from Perkins with 5:44 left in the third quarter to put Leeds up 24-7. Cordova would answer though as Simon carried the ball three times for 57 yards, the last one 30 yards down to the one, before Smith finished off the drive with a score to cut the lead back to 10.

Tim Simon ran for 180 yards in the loss.

Leeds again rode the legs of Perkins as he scored from 21 yards out to cap a 59-yard drive early in the fourth quarter and just like that the Green Wave was back up by 17 at 31-14. Cordova didn't give in though as the Blue Devils went 54 yards in 10 plays with Simon scoring from a yard out with 6:07 left, but a failed onsides kick left Leeds in good field position and they didn't disappoint. The super soph Forsythe took the handoff on the third play and raced 43 yards for the final score of the game with 4:21 remaining. A late interception by Tony Threatt sealed the win for Leeds to cap off a perfect 15-0 season.
