"Tommy told the president and me that he would help--he would call these recruits," Jacobs said on Thursday night's Tiger Talk show. "The wonderful thing is that Tommy recruited to Auburn. We feel like that because that was always his approach, not to one particular person being the kind of man he is, he recruited to Auburn so we feel good about that keeping those guys engaged."
Auburn had 25 early verbal commitments, but a significant number are reconsidering their choice or have de-committed with Tuberville and his staff not going to be there next season.
At his press conference on Thursday, Jacobs said he contacted a search firm, Bill Carr and Associates, on Wednesday night to help Auburn find a new head coach and also said that he already had a list of candidates.
"We always keep a list of coaches for all of our sports because you never know what may come up so we have a list of people that we will look into," Jacobs said. "The time-line, we are going to be as efficient as we possibly can be.
"We are not going to just interview anyone," Jacobs said. "We are going to be strategic, but we are going to be thorough. We are going to try to balance all of those things out."
In the meantime, Jacobs is trying to keep as many of Auburn's verbal commitments from de-committing, which is proving to be an issue. Jacobs said when he met with the players on Thursday evening, they mentioned that needed to be a priority.
"They started asking how they could help, recruiting-wise, and certainly we have got a plan for that," Jacobs said. "We will continue to meet with the assistant coaches tomorrow morning and put a plan together. Our student-athletes, our football players, want to be involved in that process to continue to build on the foundation that Tommy and his staff have left us with."
Jacobs said he told the players, "We are going to try to hire a guy, like I just told those men in that room over there...being a former player I know what is most important--somebody that loves me, somebody that pushes me, somebody that is going to build that foundation Tommy left so that is what we are going to do. He will be somebody that Auburn can be proud of."
