Sweet Indeed As Sweet Water Cruises To Title

Class 1A dominance continued on Friday as Sweet Water dominated Speake at Legion Field.

Birmingham, Ala.--Friday's Class 1A title contest between Speake and Sweet Water was thought to be the biggest mismatch of all the Super Six contests and it didn't fail to deliver as the Bulldogs pounded the Bobcats 42-0 for their fourth title in five years.

The star of the show was speedy junior running back Johnny Lockett. Rushing for 171 yards on just 17 carries, Lockett scored twice on the ground and also caught a touchdown pass to earn MVP honors. Teammate Jeremy Landrum had a good day in his own right, rushing for 118 yards and a score on just three carries. Chris Landrum added 49 yards and a score on just six carries as Sweet Water ran for 367 yards in the win.

Johnny Lockett hauls in a touchdown catch.

After a slow start by both teams Sweet Water finally got rolling late in the first quarter as Jeremy Landrum busted loose for 40 yards to move the Bulldogs down inside the 10-yard line. From there Chris Landum took it in from seven yards. The kick made it 7-0 Bulldogs, but that was just the start of the onslaught as Lockett proceeded to take over from that point forward.

Following a fumble by Speake, Sweet Water took over at the 19-yard line and on the second play Lockett scored from 17 yards out to give the Bulldogs a two-touchdown advantage. Four minutes later Lockett was at it again as he danced his way 45 yards for a score. Hunter Mayon's kick made the score 21-0 Sweetwater. Following an Antonio Landrum punt return for 30 yards to set them up in field position late in the half, Lockett struck again as he hauled in a 36-yard touchdown from Damaraquis Williams to put the lead at 28-0 at the break.

Things went from bad to worse for Speake to start the third quarter as a failed onsides kick gave the Bulldogs the ball at their own 45-yard line. It took only one play for Sweet Water to put the final nail in the coffin as Jeremy Landrum raced 55 yard for the score to give his team a five touchdown lead. The only points in the fourth quarter came when Williams sneaked over from the one to cap an 11-play, 66 yard drive to push the lead to 42-0.

For Speake it was a game of frustration. Despite making 11 first downs to just 14 for Sweet Water, the Bobcats tallied just 91 yards of total offense and failed to score. Dez Polk led the way with 68 yards on 19 carries, but lost 30 during the game. For the game Speake ran for 143 yards, but lost 76 throughout the course of the game.
