Gaston Comments On Willis' Exit

Linebacker commitment Harris Gaston talks about James Willis leaving Auburn for Alabama.

Birmingham, Ala.--Shock is the word that comes to mind for many Auburn fans at the news that former All-American linebacker and assistant coach James Willis jumped to rival Alabama just two weeks before signing day. For Auburn linebacker commitment Harris Gaston the news was just as surprising.

"I just found out about 30 minutes ago," Gaston tells Inside The Auburn Tigers. "I guess it's just like (Tommy) Tuberville and when he left. It's just a business really. He (Willis) was a nice person."

While the news was shocking, Gaston says he's still committed to the Tigers and isn't looking at any other schools. Recruited for the Tigers first by Terry Price and most recently by Phillip Lolley, Gaston says the departure of Willis doesn't really mean that much to him in the end because he committed to Auburn.

"We were close, but I was recruited by coach Price," he says. "I am very surprised that he left though. When I went on my visit he said the reason he was staying was because of the recruits, the linebackers. Now he's gone."

One thing in Auburn's favor at the linebacker position is that defensive coordinator Ted Roof has coached the position and played it at Georgia Tech. Gaston says he likes Roof and is anxious to get to know him even better.

"He's a nice guy," Gaston says. "We were mainly getting to know each other. We didn't talk much about the defense really. He's a nice person."

Gaston says he doesn't have any visits planned and will sign with Auburn on Feb. 4.
