Auburn's Streak Stopped By UGA

Coach Nell Fortner's Auburn women's basketball team suffered it first loss of the season.

Athens, Ga.—Auburn's hopes of an unbeaten women's basketball season ended Thursday night as the cold-shooting Tigers fell 67-58 to Georgia.

Senior DeWanna Bonner tried to keep the Tigers from suffering the upset loss, but didn't have enough help. Bonner led all scorers with 27 points and nine rebounds.

Auburn led 14-7 early in the game, but shot just 34.4 percent in the first half and led by only 29-28 at halftime. The shooting didn't improve in the second half as Auburn finished the game making 33.3 percent of its shots while Georgia hit 51.9 percent from the field.

The Lady Bulldogs improved their record to 14-7 overall and 4-2 in the SEC while Auburn dropped to 20-1 overall and 5-1 in the conference.

"We just didn't knock shots down," Auburn coach Nell Fortner said. "We had some really good looks in the first half.

Fortner added, "It is hard to get any kind of momentum on the defensive end when you are worried about knocking those shots down on the offensive end. It was just one of those nights for us."

Auburn's 58 points was a season-low for a team averaging better than 80 points per contest coming into the game.

Georgia put four players in double figures in the scoring column led by 17 from Angel Robinson as a crowd of 4,119 watched at Stegemen Coliseum.

Sherell Hobbs scored 11 points and added eight rebounds, but nobody else was much of a factor scoring for the Tigers. Whitney Boddie added six and starters Alli Smalley and Trevesha Jackson finished with just two points apiece.

Auburn out-rebounded Georgia 41-32 and had 14 turnovers, three fewer than the home team, but the shooting differential was too much to overcome as was lack of production by the AU bench that was outscored 29-6.

Auburn made jusut 2-15 threes and was 14-21 at the foul line. Georgia hit 5-12 threes and was 6-8 at the foul line.

Auburn returns to action with a Sunday road game vs. LSU.
