Tigers Thrash Tide in Tuscaloosa

Coach Nell Fortner's Tigers extended their winning streak vs. Bama while cruising to their 23rd victory of the season on Sunday.

Tuscaloosa, Ala.--Dominating the boards, Auburn jumped on Alabama early and cruised to an 81-54 SEC women's basketball victory on Sunday at Coleman Coliseum.

Auburn out-rebounded the Tide 51-29 on the way to improving its record to 23-1 overall and 8-1 in the SEC.

It was the seventh consecutive victory for Coach Nell Fortner's Tigers over Alabama as Auburn swept the regular season series.

A trio of seniors led the Tigers to victory, but everybody contributed as Fortner cleared her bench early and every player saw at least 16 minutes of game time and everybody scored for the sixth-ranked Tigers.

Senior DeWanna Bonner scored 18 points and added nine rebounds with three blocked shots for Auburn.

Senior Sherell Hobbs scored 16 points and added seven rebounds and another senior, Whitney Boddie, ran the show at point guard and posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 assists. Boddie made 6-8 field goal attempts while Hobbs was 7-11 from the field.

Auburn built the lead to double figures halfway through the first half at 26-16 on a fastbreak layup by Bonner on a pass from Boddie. It didn't take long for the lead to grow to 20 as a basket by Boddie made the score 37-17.

By halftime the Tigers were up 47-21 as Hobbs, Bonner and Boddie each had scored 10 points while Boddie had 10 first half assists.

Alabama, which fell to 12-12 overall and 0-9 in the SEC, couldn't make a run on the Tigers in the second half, even against the AU reserves.

Fortner pointed out that she was pleased with what she saw in Tuscaloosa. "It is nice to see this team playing that kind of ball at this time of year," she said.

"I thought we had some great play by Whitney Boddie," Fortner said of the point guard. "I thought she controlled her team today. I thought she made great decisions. She had no turnovers with 12 assists. She had a heck of a day today."

Fortner said she appreciated a big turnout of Auburn fans to see the game in Tuscaloosa including the ones who arrived early enough to do a Tiger Walk like the football team has. "I heard them in the dressing room," Fortner said of the Auburn fans. "It was really fun."

The Auburn coach noted that she liked what she saw from Hobbs, who came out strong at the start of the game to set the tone for the day. "I thought Sherell was very focused and very hungry," Fortner added.

Sophomore guard Alli Smalley scored nine points and added six rebounds for the Tigers while senior forward Trevesha Jackson added eight points with five rebounds as she made 4-5 field goals.

Auburn shot 48.5 percent to 34.4 percent for the Tide.

Auburn routed Bama despite being off on three-point shooting. The Tigers hit just 1-8 treys while the Tide made 5-18.

Auburn was 16-24 at the foul line while Alabama made 7-12.

The Tigers finished the game with 12 turnovers, three fewer than the home team.

Tierney Jenkins led Alabama with 13 points and seven rebounds.

The Tigers return to home on Thursday as Kentucky visits Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum.
