NCAA Tourney Notes: Auburn 85, Lehigh 49

Coach Nell Fortner's Auburn Tigers had a record-setting performance in the opening round of NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament play.

Piscataway, N.J.--New and notes from Auburn's 85-49 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament victory over Lehigh on Saturday are featured:

*The game was the first-ever women's hoops matchup between Auburn and Lehigh. The Tigers held the Patriot League champion and the league's leading scoring team to a season-low 49 points. The Mountain Hawks were averaging 67.8 points per contest.

*The loss was not only Lehigh's worst of the year, it was the first time the Mountain Hawks had lost by double figures.

*The victory was Auburn's first in NCAA play since defeating North Carolina State, 79-59 in Bridgeport, Conn., in 2004 when Joe Ciampi is head coach. The Tigers lost last year in the first round to George Washington.

*The 36-point margin of victory is the largest ever in NCAA Tournament play for the Tigers surpassing margins of 34 points vs. Illinois in 1987 and Temple in 1989.

*Auburn is more known as an offensive team this season, but the Tigers didn't allow Lehigh to score during the final nine minutes and 11 seconds of the second half. The Tigers had reserves in during most of that time.

*Whitney Boddie's assist on a pass to Alli Smalley at the 15:27 mark in the first half tied Boddie with Renae Halbrooks (1978-82) for the Auburn record in career assists with 593. Boddie broke the record at 12:31 in the first half on a pass to freshman Chantel Hilliard. With nine assists in the game the point guard now has 600 for her career. Boddie had just one turnover.

*DeWanna Bonner, who scored 26 points, reached 20 points in scoring for the 16th time this season. The SEC Player of the Year has 41 career games with 20 or more points.

*Auburn, which improved to 30-3 with the victory, now has the most wins in a season since the 1988-89 team won 32.

*The Tigers scored 80 or more points for the 15th time this season.

*The Tigers are 5-1 in games played this season at neutral sites.

*Auburn is 71-2 in the Nell Fortner Era when scoring 70 or more points.
