A six-foot-six, 305-pound 17-year-old junior from Greenville, Ga., High, Gates says he is glad he attended the combine. "I learned a lot and I think I got better," he tells Inside the Auburn Tigers.
A left tackle on offense and an end on defense, Gates notes that he is still growing and is not sure how much bigger he will get.
Greenville High head coach and athletic director Jeremey Williams says that former Auburn offensive line coach Hugh Nall was recruiting Gates last year prior to the change in AU coaching staffs.
Gates says he is interested in the Tigers, but another college is currently at the top of the list. "I want to be a mechanical engineer and Georgia Tech is my favorite right now," he says.
However, the 17-year-old notes that he doesn't have a scholarship offer from the Yellow Jackets. "I am getting a lot of mail from colleges, but I haven't gotten any offers yet," he says.
Williams says that Gates is prospect for college coaches to check out. "Kenarious is a great young man," the Greenville coach says. "He is one of our top guys. He has been playing on the varsity since he was a freshman and has gotten better every year. He is just a great kid. He works hard in the weight room and works hard in whatever he does."
Gates also is a starting center on the Greenville High basketball team which reached the Sweet 16 round of the state playoffs earlier this year. However, that isn't his favorite sport.
"I love the game of football," Gates says. "I enjoy having fun playing it and working hard for the team making sure that I do all I can for my team."
