Men Advance, Women Don't In NCAA Tennis

College Station, Tex.--The Auburn duo of Tim Puetz and Alexey Tysrenov defeated Dennis Nevolo and Ruan Roelofse in straight sets on Thursday to advance to the round of 16 in men's doubles at the NCAA Tennis Championships.

The Tigers dominated the action with a 6-3, 6-0 victory with their first round victory over the 21st ranked team from the University of Illinois.

Tysrenov and Puetz, who are ranked 10th nationally, will try to improve their 34-11 record on Friday against fourth-ranked Robert Farah and Steve Johnson of Southern Cal.

The Auburn women weren't as successful as senior Alex Haney fell in the single round of singles play and she also lost in the opening round of doubles with partner Whitney Chappell.

Haney won the first set 7-5 vs. Pac 10 Player of the Year Hilary Barte of Stanford, but fell 6-4, 6-2 in sets two and three to drop the match. Haney ended the season with an 18-4 singles record while Barte improved to 23-1.

Chappell and Haney fell 7-6 and 6-3 to Mari Andersson and Jana Juricova of Cal.

Auburn's top player, Fani Chifchieva, was upset in the opening round of play on Wednesday.
