AU Freshmen Wins National Title

Eugene, Oregon--Auburn's Marcus Rowland set a personal-record in thye 100-meters on Friday at the U.S. Junior Outdoor Track and Field National Championships.

Rowland, who just finished his freshman season at Auburn, won the event with a time of 10.02 seconds. D'Angelo Cherry of Ole Miss finished second at the event held at the University of Oregon.

"It feels real good," Rowland said. "To look up on that clock and see 10.02, it was a big accomplishment.

With the victory the SEC Freshman of the Year will represent the U.S. at the Pan American Junior Olympic Championships on July 31 in Port of Spain, Trinidad on July 31-August 2.

Also in Eugene, former Tiger star Ty Akins ran a 13.52 to advance to the semi-finals of the 110-meter hurdles.

Auburn's Joanna Atkins, the NCAA women's champion in the 400 meters, ran a 53.12 in the semi-finals and did not advance to the championship round. Atkins just wrapped up her sophomore season as an Auburn runner.
