Auburn Football Scrimmage Two News and Notes

Coach Gene Chizik's Tigers had their second scrimmage of the preseason at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Auburn, Ala.--News and notes from Auburn's second preseason football scrimmage are featured.

*Freshman Daren Bates, for the second scrimmage in a row, was aggressive and making plays, including a caused fumble that rolled out of bounds. Bates, a safety, says he is surprised he has done so well so quickly, but notes he is getting a lot of help from injured starter Mike McNeil.

*Junior college transfer Jay Wisner, a walk-on who has won some praise this week from Trooper Taylor, started the scrimmage with the first team.

*The offense moved the ball well in the first half of the scrimmage. Ben Tate was effective running the ball from the tailback position.

*Another running back, freshman Dontae Aycock, had several nice runs in the scrimmage.

*Three walk-ons will go on scholarship on Monday. Wide receiver John Cubelic, holder Clayton Crofoot and punter Clinton Durst.

*Early in the session, Mario Fannin returned a punt for a touchdown. The play was approximately 70 yards.

*Anthony Gulley, a true freshman receiver, returned a punt 19 yards and had several other good plays in the scrimmage.

*Chris Todd, who worked with the ones, had a solid day throwing the football and won praise from Gus Malzahn and a variety of players.

*Eltoro Freeman, who has his wrist wrapped, did not scrimmage. True freshman Jonathan Evans got a start at linebacker along with Craig Stevens and Josh Bynes.
