Quarterback Nearing Decision

This high school senior quarterback has one more cross country trip before he decides on where he will play his college football.

Tampa, Fla.--Quarterback Stephen Reaves from Plant High has emerged in the last two months as one of the more popular quarterback prospects not yet committed to a college.

The son of former Florida signal-caller John Reaves says he has narrowed his choices down to just three schools, but two are in the lead as he prepares for the final weekend before signing day.

"I would probably say right now, not including USC because I haven't been out there and really don't know anything about the whole place, that it's really down to Michigan State and Auburn," Reaves tells Inside The Auburn Tigers. "I like both schools a lot and I loved both of my visits. I loved the Auburn visit and I love the coaching staff at Michigan State more than anything. They are the greatest bunch of guys you'll ever meet. They are doing an awesome job of recruiting me and are really recruiting me the hardest of any of the schools.

"I like Auburn and it's in the South. It's in the SEC and I've grown up learning about the SEC. They are both really good options and they both offer a lot. It's just a decision I have to make. I think I might make it before I go to USC, but my parents are telling me just to wait it out."

Scheduled to visit Southern California last weekend, Reaves says a combination of factors made it impossible for him to travel all the way across the country. Instead, he'll make the trip this weekend and he says he's looking forward to learning more about the Trojans.

"I'm actually leaving this Friday to go," he says of his visit to USC. "It was kind of a situation where it was Super Bowl weekend and I was going to be the only recruit in. It's going to be me and two other guys this weekend. That's going to finish up all my visits."

A player who doesn't mind staying out of the spotlight right now, Reaves says that he'll likely just make his decision will little or no fanfare early next week. With coaches running low on scholarships and patience this time of year, Reaves notes that he's not going to wait around much longer.

"I'm definitely going to make an announcement before signing day," Reaves says. "I don't think I'm going to take it to signing day. I don't think the coaches will let me take it to the 5th. I don't think I'm going to make a big announcement. I'll probably just give you a call or whoever else has been calling me and just let them know. Then I'll go on from there. It's a tough decision, but I think I'll make it around the second or the third."
