Committed to Florida State out of Lowndes High, Christian got a phone call from AU assistant Curtis Luper inviting him to the Ball State game. That started a turn of events that eventually led to him choosing the Tigers on Sunday following his official visit weekend.
"They believe in telling the truth," Christian said of that initial phone call. "I wanted to experience another college. I gave them that chance and it was my overall best visit to a school. This school (Auburn) treats you the best.
"This commitment is more personal than the one at FSU," he added. "It's more personal. Their approach is way different."
Many times players take visits and when they leave they talk about the game or the environment or hanging out with current team members. While Christian said all of those things were good for him, he said the biggest thing for him was getting to know his future coaches.
"Sitting down with the coaches (was my favorite part)," Christian said. "The coaches get to you on a one-on-one level and I like that. They are very calm. That's what I liked about them."
That starts at the top with Coach Gene Chizik. Christian said he met with the first-year head man and said it went really well.
"He was just talking about how I would be a great addition to the overall recruiting class," Christian said. "He talked about the opportunities we would have in the future."
One coach that has to be excited about the commitment is Auburn offensive line coach Jeff Grimes. With Shun Coleman and Chad Slade already on board, the Tigers grabbed a very versatile and solid offensive line pick up in Christian. The big lineman said he enjoyed having the opportunity to sit down with his future coach on his visit and talk about his chances of playing early at Auburn.
"He's a very laid back person," Christian said. "He knows what he's talking about coaching the offensive line. I can see myself playing under him.
"He mapped things out to me," he added. "He showed me what I could be playing and who could move. He showed me all kinds of stuff."
In the end Christian said all the credit goes to Luper for his switch to Auburn from Florida State. That one phone call started the ball rolling and now he said he's solidly a Tiger. While he said he may visit a school or two, he'll be back for the Ole Miss game as well as Furman for homecoming. It's all due to Luper and his willingness to give it a shot.
"It was Coach Luper for inviting me, for contacting me," Christian said. "That's the biggest reason. One phone call."
