Freshman Leads Tigers in Exhibition Win

Auburn, Ala.--Freshman guard Nicolle Thomas led Auburn with 16 points as Coach Nell Fortner's Tigers defeated Georgia College & State University 73-50 in an exhibition women's basketball game on Sunday.

Thomas hit 6-13 field goals and was 4-7 on threes for the Tigers, who were 8-17 for the game on treys.

The Tigers got 14 points apiece from junior guard Alli Smalley and sophomore guard Parrisha Simmons.

Junior forward Jordan Greenleaf, in her first game back since going down with a knee injury early last season, led the Tigers in rebounds with 12. Simmons added 11 rebounds and Smalley pulled in eight.

The Tigers jumped to a 50-18 halftime lead, but were outscored by a point in the second half.

Auburn played without senior center Keke Carrier, who was held out with a minor injury. She is expected to be able to play next Friday in the regular season opener vs. Troy.

Fortner was not happy with her team's free throw shooting woes. The Tigers made just 9-28.

"We better become a better free-throw shooting team, but I saw some things I like," the coach said. "Parrisha Simmons looked really good today. She's been practicing really well and doing some nice things for us, but her rebounding was great.

"We just have to be a better free-throw shooting team if we're going to get to the line that many times," Fortner added. "We have a long way to go, but the biggest thing that I saw today is that we are such a different team than we were last year and we are still trying to figure out who that team is.

"Last year we had seniors that could make plays, but it seemed as if we were just standing around waiting for someone to make a play today. We will get better, this is our first game and you kind of expect that out of your first game."

Chantel Hilliard scored 11 points for the Tigers, who hit 41.8 percent of their shots and held the Bobcats to 25.8 percent shooting. Auburn out-rebounded the visitors 57-42.

Dominique Huff led Georgia College & State University with 16 points.

Freshman Morgan Toles scored six points and added four assists with two turnovers in 29 minutes at point guard for the Tiges. Freshman Blance Alverson scored four points and added six rebounds. Freshman center P.J. West scored six points and added four rebounds.
