Carl Stewart, a 6-2, 207-pound tailback from Division I, Class 4A power Maryville High in Tennessee, was a key player in three consecutive state titles for Maryville. He scored his 28th touchdown of the season in the state championship game come-from-behind victory over Hillsboro and he hit the 1,600 mark for rushing yards in 2002 despite sitting out a significant amount of time when Maryville had its way with overmatched opponents.
Running inside and outside, Stewart picked up 1,430 yards on 156 carries with 21 touchdowns as a junior. In both of those seasons, Maryville beat Hillsboro High of Nashville in the title game.
An honor student who has been a standout in wrestling and track and field, Stewart was honored after his senior season with one of the Tennessee Mr. Football Awards.
