Recruit Finds A Lot to Like About Trip to AU

Big offensive lineman Chad Slade talks about his official recruiting trip to Auburn.

Moody, Ala.--Chad Slade said he really liked his official visit to Auburn over the weekend and noted that the trip gave him a good feeling about his previous decision to play football for Coach Gene Chizik's Tigers.

The 6-6, 315-pound offensive tackle from Moody High School committed to the Tigers after a standout performance at an Auburn summer football camp.

Slade, who is also a star basketball player at Moody, didn't have a game on Friday night so he was able to make it to campus that day to get an early start on his visit. He was shown around campus by a true freshman offensive lineman the first night and starting junior on the second night.

"The first night my player host was John Sullen and the second night it was Byron Isom," Slade said. "I went to their dorm (Sullen) and apartment (Isom) and hung out. They were real cool. When I hung out with Byron Isom I also hung out with Michael Goggans and Craig Stevens. They are pretty cool, too."

Slade met with academic officials on Saturday, attended Auburn's first bowl practice and was a guest at the team's awards banquet on Saturday night.

"We had lunch with the academic people," he said. "I learned a lot and I want to major in criminology so I met with those people about doing that." Slade said he currently has an "A" in all of his classes at Moody High and that makes him exempt from exams.

He also had time to meet with head coach Gene Chizik and his future position coach, Jeff Grimes. "The coaches talked to me about what they expect from me like they want me to come down there next year in good shape and stuff like that," Slade said.

"They told me that it is good I am already committed to coming to Auburn and that I am happy with my decision. They told me how happy they were that I am coming down there to play."

Slade said the food was outstanding during the weekend and that he enjoyed meeting other players and some of the other prospects who were visiting, including a wide receiver from Atlanta. "I hung out with Antonio Goodwin," Slade said. "He is pretty cool. I learned a lot about him."

Overall, the weekend in Auburn was a major success, the lineman said. "I liked everything about it. The hotel (AU Hotel and Conference Center) was really nice and I had a good time there, too. The whole visit was good. Everything down there I liked. Everybody was real nice and real down to earth so I like everything about Auburn. That is my choice and it is final."
