Fifth Straight Win for Fortner's Tigers

The Tigers dominated the boards on their way to a road victory over the University of South Alabama.

Mobile, Ala.--The Auburn women's basketball team won its fifth straight game taking a 71-50 victory over South Alabama on Sunday.

Auburn's only senior, 6-7 center Keke Carrier, led the Tigers with 23 points as Auburn improved to 8-3.

Junior guard Alli Smalley scored 13 points for the Tigers while freshman point guard Morgan Toles added 10. Sophomore forward Chantel Hilliard finished with a career-high 11 rebounds.

For the game the Tigers out-rebounded South Alabama 48-26, a statistic that pleased Coach Nell Fortner.

"You have to win the rebound war every time out and I thought we had some warriors on the boards today," Fortner said. "Chantel Hilliard came in and did a really good job covering the glass. She finished with three points, but she is such a good offensive player we really have to get her some looks while she is in."

South Alabama dropped to 5-6 losing on its homecourt, the Mitchell Center. Shakira Nettles led the Jaguars with 15 points as she connected on five treys. Her team managed to hit just 30 percent of their field goals vs. the Tigers.

"We kept our focus for 40 minutes today and I thought we played some really good basketball," Fortner said. "Keke had a really good day today with some great post moves and was getting up and down the floor really well. We feed off of her a lot so it was big to get some good minutes out of her."

The Tigers, who shot 50 percent from the field for the game, led by as many as 14 points before taking a 36-23 advantage into intermission. The home team cut Auburn's lead to seven with 16:41, but the Tigers went on a 10-3 and were never threatened after that.

The Tigers return to action on Dec. 28th vs. Valparaiso in the first round of the San Diego State Surf ‘N Slam Tournament.
