Fortner's Tigers Fall on the Road

The Auburn women's basketball team struggled with its shooting in a loss at South Carolina.

Columbia, S.C.--Auburn dropped to 2-3 in the SEC women's basketball race as the Tigers lost a 63-49 decision to South Carolina on Sunday.

Valerie Nainima led the Gamecocks with 20 points. She hit a pair of treys in the final 34 seconds of the first half to stretch a three-point lead to nine points and Auburn never recovered.

Auburn fell to 11-7 overall after winning its previous two SEC matchups. South Carolina improved to 3-2 in the SEC and 10-7 overall.

Keke Carrier led Auburn with 14 points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots. Alli Smalley added 12 points for Coach Nell Fortner's team, which hit just 39.6 percent of its field goals.

"South Carolina penetrated on us at will today, our defense was rather porous and they made us pay for it," Fortner added. "They are so different than they were last year. They can push the ball so much harder and penetrate the basket so much better than they ever have."

Auburn, which had been beating opponents on the boards, was out-rebounded 38-31.

The Tigers return to action for an 8 p.m. home game vs. Vanderbilt on Thursday.
