Cats Too Strong for Fortner's Tigers

Kentucky defeated visiting Auburn on Sunday in an SEC women's basketball game.

Lexington, Ky.--Auburn fell behind early and made too many turnovers to come back as Coach Nell Fortner's Tigers lost an SEC women's basketball game 68-50 on Sunday at Memorial Coliseum.

Kentucky, which is ranked 25th, forced 25 Auburn turnovers and converted those mistakes into 30 points. UK improved to 16-3 overall and 4-2 in the SEC and remained unbeaten at home this season.

Auburn, which has lost three straight games, fell to 11-9 overall and 2-5 in the SEC.

"Kentucky has a good team with very good pressure defense," Fortner said. "Matthew Mitchell (UK coach) has done a really good job with this team. Kentucky was in control of the game the whole time and it was their day today. They played hard with great energy."

Senior center Keke Carrier led Auburn with 11 points and seven rebounds. Blanche Alverson, Jordan Greenleaf and Alli Smalley scored nine points apiece for the Tigers and Parrisha Simmons added six points and eight rebounds.

The Wildcats built a 20-point advantage with 4:11 to play before halftime and led 38-24 at intermission. The closest the Tigers could get in the second half was 10 points at the 12:59 mark.

A'dia Mathies led Kentucky with 11 points.

Auburn outrebounded Kentucky 39-33, but struggled with its shooting. The Tigers made 39 percent from the field and 2-7 threes. Auburn made just 10-20 free throws.

Kentucky hit 44.1 percent from the field, 5-16 threes and 11-19 free throws.
