Lady Vols Overpower Tigers

The Tennessee Lady Vols took control early and dominated the slumping Auburn women's basketball Tigers.

Knoxville, Tenn.--Tennessee hit 13 three-pointers as the fifth-ranked Lady Vols cruised to an 85-56 SEC women's basketball victory on Thursday night.

Combine UT's threes with 18 Auburn turnovers and 35.7 percent shooting for the Tigers and that explains the easy victory for the home team.

The Lady Vols improved to 18-2 overall and they lead the SEC with a 6-1 conference record. Auburn fell to 11-10 overall and 2-6 in the SEC.

Auburn coach Nell Fortner, whose Tigers won both games last season vs. Tennessee, said her team's defense left something to be desired, but said on the positive side the Tigers "played hard."

Junior guard Alli Smalley led Auburn in scoring with 21 points, but none of her teammates reached double figures. Senior Keke Carrier added eight points while freshmen Blanche Alverson and Morgan Toles scored eight points apiece for the Tigers.

Auburn took a quick 5-0 lead, but Tennessee turned up its defensive intensity and took control of the game in the first half. The Vols took the lead at the 14:42 mark at 13-12 on a basket by Kelley Cain and never trailed after that. By halftime the margin was 43-25.

Anjie Bjorklund led the UT three-point assault with a half dozen on the way to scoring 20 points.

"Tennessee played very well, shot the ball really well," Fortner said. "We did a poor job on transition defense and gave up a lot of looks from the 3. It was a good night for them, not for us, and we just have to get back up on the horse on Sunday.

"We have to keep working hard and not let the team lose their belief in what we are doing," added Fortner. "Our effort was good tonight, we worked hard, it was just not enough. Tennessee shot the ball so well and had 18 offensive boards, it is hard to play against that."

Auburn, which has lost four straight games, will try to end the streak with a Sunday home game at 5 p.m. vs. Georgia.
