Cullman, Ala.--Auburn picked up its second verbal commitment for the 2011 signee class on Saturday when Cullman High School offensive lineman Spencer Region announced that he will sign with the Tigers.
The big lineman surprised people attending his announcement ceremony on Saturday because he was expected to announce for the Tide, his childhood favorite. He had even told several people his choice was Alabama, but on Saturday he announced he was going to Auburn.
"I commited to Auburn University today and I feel real good about it," Region tells Inside the Auburn Tigers.
"I made my decision at 10:30 this morning that Auburn is the right place for me and I feel good about that decision,"he adds.
Spencer Region is shown at a summer football camp.
Region says he is excited about the opportunity to play for Auburn offensive line coach Jeff Grimes. "I am blessed to have a coach like that to play for in college," Region says. "He is a real good guy and he is going help me do big things and I am going to help him do big things.
"We are going to be good," he says. "Coach Grimes wants the best offensive linemen in the state and the best offensive linemen in the country and I thought I would help him with that goal."
A standout performer at an Auburn football camp last summer, Region notes that he grew up an Alabama fan, but really likes Auburn offensive line coach Jeff Grimes and the rest of the AU staff.
Region took an unofficial visit to check out the Tigers in January and he said he really enjoyed getting to know the Auburn coaches better.
