Slumping AU Team Not Close Vs. LSU

LSU ran away from Coach Nell Fortner's Tigers in the first half on the way to an SEC women's basketball victory.

Auburn, Ala.--Allison Hightower personally out-scored Auburn in the first half as the LSU women's basketball team defeated Auburn 75-51 on Sunday at Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum.

Hightower scored 24 of her 29 points in the first half.

LSU avenged a homecourt loss to Auburn earlier this season and improved its record to 17-7 overall and 6-6 in the SEC.

Both teams had troubles scoring early in the game, but Auburn stayed cold throughout the first half and trailed 42-13 at halftime.

"I think the game came down to the first half," Auburn coach Nell Fortner said. "We turned the ball over too many times and we missed shots. When you miss easy shots it affects your confidence more than when you miss tough shots.

"It was the turnovers that really hurt us and we just could not get it back on track," Fortner added. "I thought in the second half we came out and did some nice things and competed hard. Give LSU credit, they answered everything we tried to do. It was just a tough day for us."

Auburn continued its slump, losing a fourth consecutive game to fall to 12-14 overall and 3-10 in the SEC. The Tigers have dropped eight of their last nine games.

"It is frustrating, but it is something we have to keep working past," Auburn junior guard Alli Smalley said. "We still have three SEC games and then the tournament and that is something that we all have to remember.

"The season is not over and we still have a lot of improving to do and we can even work for next year," Smalley added. "We are still focusing on this year and we are still continuing to get better and not give up on ourselves and the system."

Auburn hit just 18-48 field goals (37.5 percent) while LSU made 27-58 (46.6 percent).

LSU's defense forced 15 Auburn turnovers and LSU had just seven. The visitors out-rebounded Auburn 35-31 and made 6-14 threes while Auburn hit 3-7.

Jordan Greenleaf, who scored all 14 of her points in the second half, was the leading scorer for Auburn. Freshman Blanche Alverson scored 11 points and Smalley added 10.

LSU double-teams Auburn freshman point guard Morgan Toles.

LSU head coach Van Chancellor said, "Our defense and out-rebounding was good, and then we were really just getting the ball to Allison and she was just scoring right and left. She had 24 at halftime. When we played them before we didn't guard them. Tonight, we guarded. Last time, the point guard killed us and KeKe Carrier killed us. Morgan (Toles) hurt us really bad up there. She and Carrier had 17 points. We just decided we were going to take that away from them tonight. We were going to double Carrier every time she touched it. I was really proud of us defensively.

"Our defense in the SEC has not been what it should have been, but the last two games it's been really good," the LSU coached added.

Toles scored eight for the Tigers and Carrier finished with four points.
