Tigers Fall In SEC Women's Tournament

The Auburn women's basketball team lost to Kentucky in the quarter-finals of the conference tournament on Friday.

Duluth, Ga.--Auburn's season ended with a 65-54 loss to No. 2 seed Kentucky in the second round of the SEC Women's Basketball Tournament.

Kentucky converted 20 Auburn turnovers into 22 points to take the season series 2-1. Auburn had defeated UK at Auburn to close the regular season on Sunday.

SEC Player of the Year, Victoria Dunlap, hit just 2-15 shots at Auburn on Sunday, but found her shooting touch at the Gwinnett Center on Friday to lead all scorers with 24 points.

Freshman point guard Morgan Toles led the Tigers with 13 points while Alli Smalley added 11. Auburn's only senior, Keke Carrier, closed her career with nine points and four rebounds.

Auburn, which hit 23-56 field goals, finished its season with a 15-16 record. Coach Nell Fortner's team hit 2-11 threes and 6-11 free throws.

"I thought a little bit of our youth showed," Fortner said of Friday's game. The Auburn coach added, "The future is very bright and I am excited about it."

Auburn finished 1-1 at the tournament. The Tigers opened the event with a victory over Florida on Thursday.

We have great leadership coming back next year in Alli Smalley and Jordan Greenleaf, who will be seniors," Fortner said. "They played about every minute of every game since they've been at Auburn and playing well. I think we will be a hungrier team next year and definitely a more experienced team."

Auburn led by as many as five points in the opening half, but UK scored 18 of the last 24 points in the first half to take a 32-25 halftime lead.

Kentucky built the lead to 14 points early in the second half, but Auburn fought back with an 11-0 run to cut the gap to 39-36 at the 13:53 mark before hitting another scoring drought.
