Big Week For AU Baseball Has Tigers On Track

Auburn defeated LSU over the weekend to improve to 7-5 in SEC play this year.

Auburn, Ala.--The Auburn Tigers took a huge step towards their goal of making the SEC Baseball Tournament for the first time since 2003 over the weekend with a series victory over third-ranked LSU at Plainsman Park. It was the first home series win versus LSU since 1998 and moves Auburn to 7-5 in SEC play.

To put that SEC record into perspective and also Auburn's struggles in recent years, it is the latest that an Auburn team has been two games over .500 in the league since that same 2003 season. That year the Tigers started 9-3 and finished the SEC schedule with an 18-12 record.

This Auburn team still has a tough task ahead as the Tigers will travel to Vanderbilt this weekend and still must travel to Arkansas and Ole Miss this season, but there is no denying it was a step in the right direction for Coach John Pawlowski's program.

In addition to the two wins over LSU on Friday and Saturday, only the second two-game losing streak for LSU in the last 135 games, Auburn also had mid-week wins over Georgia State and South Alabama to finish the week at 4-1.

Offensive Player of the Week: There are plenty of candidates for this honor as Hunter Morris and Brian Fletcher both had solid weeks, but this week the award is shared by a pair of outfielders in Justin Fradejas and Trent Mummey. Playing both center and right field, Fradejas was 9-21 on the week with six RBI. Back from injury, Mummey was 7-18 with three home runs and 11 RBI in five games this week.

Justin Fradejas is mobbed by his teammates after his bunt scored Casey McElroy with the winning run on Sunday.

Pitcher of the Week: Another category with multiple players who could be the winner. Both Sean Ray and Grant Dayton had solid outings in wins on Saturday and Sunday, but closer Austin Hubbard was outstanding in his two appearances this week. In five innings against LSU, Hubbard allowed just two hits and one earned run as he got the win in Sunday's clinching game.
