Coach Says Shaw Guard Plans to Sign With AU

Auburn coach Tony Barbee is expected to add a third spring signee this week.

Columbus, Ga.--Auburn men's basketball Tony Barbee has picked up a commitment from what would be a third signee for the spring period.

Shaw High School coach Terry White tells Inside the Auburn Tigers that Chris Denson, a 6-2 guard, has committed to sign a scholarship to play for the Tigers.

"He will be signing with Auburn in the next day or two," the coach says. "He is a combo guard who will fit well in Coach Barbee's dribble-drive style of offense."

Coach Tony Barbee

An All-State selection for the Raiders after averaging better than 24 points per game as a senior, he was recruited by Florida, Western Kentucky, North Carolina-Greensboro, UCLA, UNLV, Villanova, Buffalo and Western Kentucky. In addition to Auburn, the guard has offers from Utah State, Western Kentucky, Northeastern, Buffalo and others, White notes.

"He is a very good basketball player," White says. "A lot of college coaches have been looking at him. He is already academically qualified and he is a player who will add size and strength in college and continue to improve.:

Barbee has signed two forwards this spring--6-7 forward Josh Langford from Lee of Huntsville and 6-9 forward Luke Cothron from Flora MacDonald Academy in North Carolina.

Commenting on Denson, White says, "He is a good ball handler and passer and is a really good scorer. Chris is a gym rat who is always working on his game."
