Auburn became the 13th college to offer a scholarship to the 6-0, 180-pound cornerback from Madison Heights High School.
"It was pretty surprising getting an offer from Auburn since they said they don't recruit up in this area," he tells Inside the Auburn Tigers." "In fact, it was sort of a shock."
However, he notes that the offer didn't come out of nowhere because he had been in contact with Auburn cornerbacks coach Phillip Lolley and has started to build a relationship with the coach.
"I talked to Coach Lolley two or three days ago," Showers says. "He pretty much told me, ‘Let's get you down here and see how you like the campus and everything.' He said he was going to send me info about Auburn and how it is."
Rated a three-star cornerback prospect by Scout.com, he also has early offers from Michigan State and Michigan after making 42 tackles with 12 pass deflections as a junior. He also rushed for 1,542 yards and 20 touchdowns.
Showers notes that he plans to check out the Auburn campus this summer when he wraps up his junior year. "I am still in school," he says. "We get out on June 17th.
"I am going to visit Auburn around the 4th of July weekend," says Showers, a three-sport athlete who also competes in basketball and track and field at Madison Heights High.
Showers is interested in studying mechanical engineering in college and notes that he is doing well in the classroom as a high school student. "I think I just got accepted into the National Honor Society," he says.
