Auburn Junior Advances at NCAA Tournament

Tim Puetz has advanced to the round of 32 in the NCAA Men's Tennis Tournament.

Athens, Ga.--Junior Tim Puetz advanced to the round of 16 with his second victory at the NCAA Men's Tennis Tournament on Thursday. Competing at the University of Georgia, Puetz took a 6-4, 7-6 victory over Jeff Dadamo of Texas A&M. The victory improved his record to 19-6.

"Tim has played two good players in these first two rounds and he has won both of them in straight sets," Auburn coach Eric Shore said. "It will be a tough match tomorrow, but he has as good a chance as anybody. He's capable of doing a lot of damage in this tournament."

Puetz won his opening round match 6-3, 6-3 vs. Sven Vloedgraven of Binghamton.

Playing doubles on Thursday, Puetz and Alex Stamchev lost 7-5, 6-3 to Chase Buchanan and Dino Marcan of Ohio State. "Tim and Alex played a good team today," Shore said. "I don't think we played particularly well. It's too bad because they've played well all year, but they didn't play one of their better matches today. They couldn't get anything going all day. They tried, but just couldn't get anything going."

The loss dropped the record to 13-8 for Stamchev and Puetz.

Fani Chifchieva

In the women's singles competition, senior Fani Chifchieva lost her second round match 7-6 7-5 to Maria Sanchez in the round of 32.
