Southern Miss Moves On With 19-6 Win Over JSU

Southern Miss advanced to Sunday in the Auburn Regional with a 19-6 win over Jacksonville State.

Auburn, Ala.--Southern Miss lived to play another day on Saturday as the Golden Eagles hit a trio of three-run homers in the game and scored in seven of nine innings in a 19-6 victory over Jacksonville State. On the mound USM closer Collin Cargill saved the day as he came on to pitch in the second inning and went the distance in picking up the win.

I'm extremely proud of our team," Southern Miss coach Scott Berry said. "They had their backs to the wall today and they fought. I've been challenging our guys to play every game like its their last and now that's actually the case."

In seven and two/thirds innings Cargill allowed just one run on seven hits and struck out nine. Starter Todd McInnis went just one inning for the Golden Eagles while reliever Ryan MacNamara allowed three runs on three hits in just one/third of an inning.

At the plate Vollmuth was 3-5 with four RBI while Taylor Walker was a perfect 4-4 with 4 runs batted in as well. Adam Doleac added a pair of hits and was the third USM player with four RBI in the game.

For Jacksonville State Steven Leach was 3-5 with a pair of RBI while Todd Cunningham, Daniel Adamson and Jay Davis all had a pair of hits. On the mound five different Gamecock hurlers combined to allow 19 runs on 18 hits to Southern Miss. Hunter Rivers took the loss to drop to 3-4 on the season.

Jacksonville State's season ends at 32-26 while Southern Miss advances to face the loser of Saturday night's Auburn-Clemson match up. Game times for Sunday are 1 p.m. for the loser's bracket game and 5 p.m. for the winner's bracket game.
