Less than a month into his tenure at Ball State, Whitford has already gained the services of two high caliber recruits to round out the Class of 2013, now he is putting the finishing touches on his coaching staff.
The majority of the staff is now complete as Ball State announced the hiring of former Western Illinois Associate Head Coach Billy Wright to a role as an assistant on Whitford's staff. The hiring means all three main staff members in place and full focus can be placed on recruiting the 2014 class, which will feature 5 open scholarships.
Wright, who is a native of Richmond, IN, comes to Ball State after serving as an assistant under former Ball State Assistant Coach Jim Molinari at Western Illinois. Wright began his tenure there in 2008 and moved up to Associate Head Coach in 2011.
Prior to assisting at Western Illinois, Wright spent 12 years as a coach in Indiana including spending 2 seasons heading the program at Indianapolis Pike.
Wright's hiring comes less than a week after Whitford tabbed Jason Grunkemeyer for his staff.
Grunkemeyer, who played at Miami when Whitford was an assistant there, assisted from 2007-12 at his alma mater before serving as an Athletic Director for a year and a half at Talawanda High School in Oxford, OH.
Prior to his tenure at Miami, Grunkemeyer served as an assistant for six seasons at Saint Louis for coaches Lorenzo Romar and Brad Soderberg.
Whitford's first hire came on 4/19 when he selected Brett Nelson as Associate Head Coach.
Nelson, who is valued as one of the top young assistants in the nation by many services, came to Muncie after spending 2 seasons at Drake.
