It didn't take long from there for him to decide to verbally commit to the Cardinals - becoming the 8th commitment for the Class of 2014, and the 5th from Indiana.
"First and foremost, I saw the great academics at Ball State," Saum said. "They have a great staff, from up to Coach (Pete) Lembo, down to my position coach (Joey) Lynch. Then I got to meet some of the players. They are a great group of qaulity guys. Also, the recruiting class that they are bringing in - there are a lot of really good athletes in that class."
"It was really just a total family decision," Saum said. "My parents helped me decide on Ball State, my high school coach (Rick) Streiff helped me pick the Cardinals. It was just a decision that we all agreed on."
Saum, who is 6-4 215, brings a lot of versatility and athleticism to the TE position for the Cardinals.
"Yeah, I am not a really big TE, I'm not one of those converted offensive linemen," Saum said. "But I definitely put my hand in the dirt and block effectively. I just bring a lot of versatility to a passing attack by being able to split out wide and play at different spots."
With his college decision out of the way early, now Zach can focus on his main goal coming up this season.
"We are focused on getting that state title," Saum said. "We have won three in a row and I want to make sure we do all the things we need to do to make sure we do it once again."
