Recruiting Board: Ball State Offense

Ball State is working hard on the Class of 2014 with 14 verbal commitments already, who might be next in line? Here is a look at the offensive side of the ball.

Ball State head coach Pete Lembo has made no bones about the size of this class. The 3rd year Head Coach has said time and again in the media that the Class of 2014 will be smaller, thanks in part to retention of underclassmen as well as the redshirting philosophy he brought to Ball State. The Cardinals are probably only going to sign around 16 to 19 players in the class dependent upon attrition and roster moves from here until next offseason, and with 14 verbal commits on board already, the targets have got to be narrowed. Here is a list of possibilities in our opinion:

Running Back

With only 3 scholarship RBs on the roster for the 2013 season, the position has to be an important one to fill for the Class of 2014. Ball State has already picked up a commitment from 5-10 185 back Darian Green of Lafayette Jeff, but are probably in the market for one more option.

Ball State Insider Forecast: Option #1, in our opinion has to be Jarvion Franklin of Tinley Park (IL) Andrew. The Cardinals are not alone in seeking Franklin's services as he has picked up offers from Mid-American Conference rivals Northern Illinois, Western Michigan & Miami. The rugged and explosive back is 6-0 217 and would be a likely option to replace similar sized Jahwan Edwards (5-10 228) in the future and could team with Green for a 1-2 punch similar to the Edwards and Horactio Banks duo the Cardinals boast now.

Wide Receiver

Ball State has a loaded stable of WR prospects at varying grade levels and added another big, athletic option on the outside in 6-3 180 Devin Reece of Westfield (IN). One spot remains open though and that is for a shifty, quick slot guy to replace 5th year senior Jamill Smith.

BSI Forecast: Ball State thought they had their man for the position in Fishers (IN) Slot J-Shun Harris, but he decommitted, so the spot is open once again. There are three possibilities for this position in Roy Denson, Robert Priester and Jon Vea' Johnson.

Denson, a 5-10 176 WR from Cape Coral (FL) Baker, visited as part of the Super Sunday Event the Cardinals held. He has offers from Buffalo, Miami, Northern Illinois and Middle Tennessee State, so the competition for his services is fierce.

Priester is a 5-9 165 WR from Tampa Robinson, he has offers from Utah State and Youngstown State.

Johnson, who is another option, is a 5-11 174 WR from Gary (IN) West. He has offers from Cincinnati, Toledo & Eastern Michigan.

Offensive Line

Ball State has already added two commitments in the class in OG Malik King of Muskegon (MI) and OT Alex Joss of Walled Lake, (MI) Western. Are the Cardinals looking for more? They might be looking for one OT & OG each to round out the group.

BSI Forecast: Ball State has plenty of offers still out to Offensive Tackles but the most likely are narrowed down to three names – Levi Walton, Luke Rasmussen & John Kurtz. Kurtz & Walton both visited this past weekend and could be options. Kurtz (6-6 250) holds only one other offer, from Western Kentucky while Walton (6-6 275) has a plethora of offers including in state school Florida International and BCS offers in Arizona and Indiana.

Rasmussen (6-7 265) could be the other option. The Brookfield (WI) Central product has a ton of offers to choose from including offers from Ivy League schools & Wyoming.

At Guard there seems to be two possibilities in 6-4 294 Matt Byrne and 6-4 305 Dakota Tallman. Byrne, who hails from Chicago powerhouse St. Rita, has reportedly narrowed his list to Ball State and Western Michigan. Tallman, who is from Elyria (OH) Catholic has offers from Buffalo, Bowling Green & Kent.
