Athletic DE chooses Ball State

Downers Grove North DE Vontae Diggs became the latest verbal commitment for the Ball State Football Class of 2014.

GoDaddy Bowl weekend started off very for the Ball State football staff.

On Friday, the Cardinals and Head Coach Pete Lembo picked up a massive verbal commitment in DE Vontae Diggs from Downers Grove Horth (IL) High School. The 17th commitment in the Class of 2014.

Diggs, an ultra athletic 6-4 215 DE, picked the Cardinals over offers from Toledo, Western Michigan, Bowling Green and Eastern Illinois.

"The coach staff and the players greeted me with open arms and made me feel as if I was a Cardinal the whole time," Diggs said when asked about why he picked Ball State. "The team reminded me of my high school team in the sense of one big family."

Did I mention Diggs is athletic?

The past season Diggs lined up at WR, QB, LB and returned both punts and kickoffs. Not a normal resume for a future DE.

"Yeah, I am really good in open space," Diggs said of his strengths. "I am a versatile player so I can play on my feet and with my hand in the dirt. I've had many coaches say that I'm very explosive off the ball as well."
