Ball State Football: Commits Talk Hire

Ball State’s commits all have a new head coach to learn before signing day next month.

Ball State named its new Head Football Coach Thursday afternoon via press release and the excitement from the Cardinal recruits could be felt all the way in Muncie.

Mike Neu, former New Orleans Saints QB Coach and former Ball State QB, was hired to replace Pete Lembo who left for Maryland at the end of December. Neu, 45, is a young, energetic coach that has drawn rave reviews from members of the coach fraternity and former players, including future NFL Hall of Famer Drew Brees.

We reached out to a handful of recruits to see what their thoughts were on the hire Thursday evening, and the news was met with great excitement.

”I'm excited, I like that he's a new younger coach. And the fact that he played for Ball State makes it more exciting. I'm looking forward to talking to him. Getting a coach from the NFL brings a different kind of game with football knowledge.” – Wyatt Plate, WR, Jackson (MI) Lumen Christi

“Yeah it's very exciting. He knows ultimately what it takes for players to make it to that next level and worked with guys like Drew Brees. It will be fun to see how he brings that type of experience to the football team. I’m just hoping the (current) staff doesn't get cleaned out. But I think it's a great decision.” – Tyler Kirtz, WR, Brownsburg (IN)

”I think it's a great pickup. An alumni as a coach has got to be one of the best things for a team. He knows what it feels like to be a successful player at Ball State and he will lead us in his footsteps into turning the football program back around.” – Mitchell Larsen, S, Fairfield (OH)

” I'm glad a new coach has been named and I'm looking forward to meeting him soon.” – Brandon Martin, LB, Indianapolis (IN) Lawrence North

"That's great I'm happy for him and excited to play for him knowing he is a Ball State alumni and also having experience in the NFL, not only preparing the team for a championship but preparation for the NFL. I know there is going to be lots of tradition coming back to Ball State." - Frank Burton, TE/DE, New Castle (DE) William Penn
